He code

The winter of 2015 came suddenly ahead of schedule. A rare blizzard pulled Beijing into bitter coldness overnight.

I started this snowy trip to Shenyang, a colder city, to interview He Wei, president of He Eye Specialist Hospital. This time, the subjects of the interview are Dr. He Wei and He Xiangdong, who have returned from Japan. The brothers have returned home and started the business for 20 years.

The government is vigorously supporting high-tech industries and private enterprises, calling for overseas high-end talents to return home to start their own businesses, so as to enhance the value of "made in China" and pave the way and build bridges for speeding up the completion of China's industrial upgrading. This is another key point in China's economic development, and I am particularly willing to go to the front line to see for myself and explore the code for the success behind this private enterprise, He Eye Specialist Hospital.

He Wei provides free clinic service in Benxi, Liaoning Province

At first glance, when I saw a set of numbers from my interviewees, I was "shocked" there:

8.8 million, 1.802 million, 197 million, 48%, 80%.

These numbers, like vivid fields, see all kinds of crops thriving with abundant soil, fertilizer and water, and keeping growing. Here are the details:

Since its establishment 20 years ago, He Eye Specialist Hospital has served a total of 8.8 million people; the cost of free training of grass-roots doctors is 1.802 million yuan; a total of 197 million yuan of medical expenses have been reduced for the people; 48 per cent of the total operation volume is free; It has sent brightness to nearly 80% of the patients with ophthalmopathy in Liaoning Province.

In this set of data, there is a direct reduction of fees for patients, as well as a reduction in training fees for grass-roots doctors such as villages and towns. President He Wei said: "for remote areas, only by training more local doctors can we really solve the problem for ordinary people to see a doctor." it is better to teach people to fish than to treat people with fish. "

Now, the group has grown from a scratch 20 years ago to a large ophthalmology group with eight eye hospitals, 60 optometry stores, one medical school, one eye care industry research base, and more than 1,600 health care and teaching staff.

It is necessary to note once again that this is a private enterprise founded by only two ophthalmologists without a penny of support from the government.

II

I hurried to see He Eye Specialist Hospital. The headquarters of the Yellow River Street, seems like a simple building similar to the office building of the early 1980s. It’s old, worn, dark and thick. It is absolutely impossible to compare with the brand-new post-modern buildings of many big hospitals in Beijing with large glass curtain walls. However, on my own close observation, He Eye Specialist Hospital has the same medical equipment and examination equipment as Peking Union Medical College Hospital and Tongren Hospital, and even equipment that the two hospitals have not seen. As for He's "software", when I went to the intraocular pressure test area, I heard the nurse calling the patient's name, all of whom were saluted as "certain uncle" and "certain aunt", which sound amicable. For a long time after that, I was still amazed by the warmth of this scene.

In this regard, later president He said to me, "it's a piece of cake."

In our hospital, doctors and nurses can often be seen buying food for patients.

Our hospital advocates considerate services and respect to patients is a basic requirement. "

What makes me even more excited is that at the back of the He Eye Specialist Hospital Building, there is a small building without a sign, but it is also a hospital - He's Civilian Eye Hospital. The patients who come here for medical treatment are poor people selected and introduced by government grass-roots organizations, and He gives them free treatment. I looked closely at the examination room, the pharmacy, the operation room, and so on. Without the "luxury" of the main building, but the doctors and nurses were of the same capacit, and the work attitude was equally meticulous.

Talent is the most precious treasure in the world.

Eyes are human's most precious treasure.

In He Eye Specialist Hospital, patients are equal and everyone gets the respect they deserve.

That's nice! It's really good! Thumbs-up for them!

III

I imagined the appearance of president He, but never expect him to look so ordinary.

On the night of my arrival in Shenyang, I chatted with several friends from the literary and press. At this time, a man about 1.8 meters tall, dressed in a Chinese cloth shirt, came to us quietly. Someone knew him and introduced him as president He Wei. He smiled and held out his hand. He was considerate and greeted the people one by one.

He Wei's hair curled naturally, withing a few strands dangling from his forehead, much like the movie actor Yu Yang. He doesn't sound like an ophthalmologist, but a bit like us humanities workers, talking about literature, reading, eloquence, and the Rothschild family. However, he is indeed a senior ophthalmologist. In addition to treatments, he also has more than 10 patents in the field of ophthalmology, such as multi-functional split hook, dry active amniotic membrane preparation method and so on. He is currently the co-chairman of the Western Pacific region of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and is the only Chinese among them.

In the fast changing 1980s, China quickly opened the door in the course of reform and opening up. As China’s only official ophthalmology student sent overseas, He Wei traveled east to Japan and joined Kyushu University. He studied for his doctorate from Professor Minamata Meng, a famous ophthalmologist, and Takeshi Matsui, president of Oshima Eye Hospital. His graduation thesis was published in the international well-known magazine "CANCER" ("Cancer"). Kyushu University with more than 100 years of history has only published a total of only more than 60 articles on the magazine. He Weicheng is one of the "top ten alumni" of Kyushu University. Guo Moruo and others are before him.

In 1993, he obtained the qualification of a doctor in ophthalmology at Fukuoka University. His income became more and more abundant, and he soon had a Mercedes-Benz car, a big house, and later a big TV set and computer that ordinary Japanese families did not dare to pay attention to.

All the changes began in 1992, when He Wei returned to China with the Japanese medical delegation to China to take part in a free clinic cataract surgery for ordinary people in the northeast in Fushun. In the deep mountains, black waters, and vast arable land, villagers lined up for diagnosis, and keep saying "thank you doctor" like the Hun River on the bank (Hunhe River is Fushun's mother river), resonating in his young heart. In 10 years, he came back 18 times, each time 10 days. The doctors were exhausted, but the patient is really too many! In the end, everyone has to check only one eye and wait until next year. The most difficult part is to leave. Pairs of rough hands stained with black earth hold his hand, arm, sleeve, satchel for a long time. They prayed to him like a Bodhisattva: "Doctor, you must come back next year. I have a blind eye waiting for you!" What He Wei could not stand most was that one day after all the operations had been done, all the "tools" had been packed in boxes, and suddenly a senior man and his grandchildren came. The blind grandfather, led by his little grandson, knelt down to He Wei at once. Grandpa was holding a rope in tears, and the little grandson held He Wei's leg and shouted, "save my grandfather's life!" It turned out that the two depended entirely on the grandfather to grow some fields for a living. After his grandfather's eyes were broken, he could no longer work for the family, but also became a burden on the family. In order to lighten the burden on families who could no longer bear the pressure, the old man attempted to hang himself twice.

That night, He Wei was sleepless, always thinking about those figuress. At first the idea was like a distant star in the sky, but now it was getting closer and closer to him, taking root in his heart a little by little: returning home, running a civilian hospital, and treating the eyes of his parents and villagers. This seemed to have become an urgent decision. He Wei became restless. He felt that the heat in his body was growing by moment, as if it were about to explode!

In 1995, He Wei made a difficult decision: he left Japan, where he had lived for eight years, and returned to the motherland with his virtuous and strong wife Fu Lifang and his brother He Xiangdong. At that time, there were four containers filled with old equipment and equipment that had been phased out by the Oshima Eye Hospital. The brothers treat them like treasures and pulled back everything that could be pulled back. When they set foot on the familiar and somewhat noisy, busy black land, tears burst into their eyes!

IV

Many years after He Wei returned home to start a business, when he was interviewed by CCTV as a "successful person," the host asked him, "is it difficult?" Is it bitter? "

He could not answer for a moment. It was only for a long time that I did not know how many times I had said it in my heart: "bitter, to the point where I can't express it, this kind of suffering is really bitter!"

In December 1995, He Eye Specialist Hospital opened after borrowing a small house of 125 square meters from the Children's Hospital. Diagnosis, charge, deliver medicine, all crowded in this cabin. In icy winter, the cold in Shenyang is not a legend, but can freeze cats and dogs in leather jackets to death! However, the radiator in the house is inefficient ‘cause they hve no money to pay for it. But there are still some ruffians and scoundrels like "sitting households" to blackmail, you do not withdraw money, they will have the ability to shut you down.

Even He Wei's alma mater did not support him, some teachers scolded him: you dare to call "He Shi", too arrogant! Some teachers worried for him. After all, he has been in the country for eight years and has an inexplicable "cultural gap" or "cultural shock".

He did not pay attention to the "low-profile" of Chinese culture-he could not publicize it, he could not be sharp, he could not work hard without looking at the eyes of his neighbors, and he had to worship a few Bodhisattvas. However, He Wei felt that he was not arrogant, but brought back the most advanced ophthalmology technology in the world at that time. His idea is very simple. He built He Eye Specialist Hospital to treat eyes for those who could not afford it. One more man could save one more eye.

He will never forget the scene when he returned to free clinic 18 times during his study abroad! He Wei does not feel that he needs to count on other’s help. The CPC and the government is the strongest backing. Since the reform and opening up, the state has put up so much money to send foreign students to study abroad in batches, paying attention to their growth like their parents, and looking forward to their early return from their studies and contributing to the development of China. A series of policies and measures have also been promulgated to support them to return home to start their own businesses. Where is spring? Spring is in this mighty east wind!

"I just want to be famous," he said.

That is, to stand on the top of the mountain and let everyone know that they can come to me to treat their eyes! "

He said: "He Eye Specialist Hospital is not He Wei's, but China's"

"One day, we will be on a par with the world," he said.

For this reason, the two brothers go all in with their career, resting for only three or four hours a day, not only to show people the eyes, surgery, but almost everything, like the patient’s keepers.

What I eat is the simplest meal, and what I hold out is the purest heart.

V

The patient came gradually. But it was mostly difficult diseases that could not be treated by other hospitals. Patients have been repeatedly running around in small cities, big cities, small hospitals and big hospitals, and finally, they have been admitted to the doctor in an emergency, and come to He "out of desperation." He Wei is both happy and worried: if is the patients were cured, his reputation will spread, and everyone will be happy. If they were not cured, bad things will spread for thousands of miles, and the reputation that he has just established will be smashed. Never backing away, He Wei face difficulties again and again!

Finally, one day, something happened!

A middle-aged man held up a sign, "He Wei, give me back my eyes!" He broke into the hall of He Eye Specialist Hospital, jumped up and down, roared loudly, and kept saying that He Wei had screwed up his treatment and demanded compensation of 600,000 yuan. When He Wei arrived, he recognized that this was a person who had served a sentence in prison. In order to get out of prison, he used a toothbrush to injure himself, causing macular holes in both eyes fractured and was nearly blind. He Wei treated him until his double vision returned to 0.6. But he brought in journalists, developed the event on the spot, and threatened to make the front page of the newspaper! Later, his unreasonable demands were not met, and he went so far as to follow He Wei's wife and children with ulterior motives! For a time, the city is unrest!

Fortunately, under the personal questioning of the leading personnel of the provinces and cities, the incident finally came to light: a doctor of the Peking University Hospital proved that He Wei's treatment was very successful, and the patient repented and confessed that there was someone behind the set-up. It turned out to be a peer framing, in an attempt to wipe out Ho, who has just gained a foothold, and drive his two brothers "back to Japan!"

When He Wei mentioned this history again today, there was still a gloomy look on his face: at that time, it was really dangerous for the other side to find people from all walks of life and form a force that could not cause trouble. The goal was to bring down He Eye Specialist Hospital and close it down! In the mid-1990s, there are three advanced techniques in ophthalmology: vitrectomy, phacoemulsification and fundus laser.

At that time, the best eye hospitals in China, such as Beijing Tongren and Peking Union, were just taking off. He Wei and He Xiangdong, two doctors, have already applied these three advanced technologies in treatment, so that they can also achieve the success of treating the troublemaker above to 0.6 of their double eyesight. This is something that other hospitals in Shenyang simply do not dare to think of. However, the two doctors, He Wei and He Xiangdong, have already applied these three advanced technologies to treatment, so that they can also achieve the success of treating the troublemaker to 0.6.

When a provincial leading person heard that there were 10 doctors criticizing the He brothers at the scene in Shenyang, he angrily said, "can Shenyang leave a few good people in place?" At that time, the secretary of the municipal party committee also got angry with the relevant departments: "what kind of business were you up to? Hire people!" If you bring in people like He Wei, you will have everything!"

He Wei survived the danger, but he was not happy at all. He knew that he had touched the interests of others. For many days in a row, the word "aspiration" lingered in his mind. What aspiration? He Wei examined himself over and over again: first, out of love for his fellow people; second, out of love for patients; third, out of love for his loved ones; and, most importantly, out of love for the motherland.

VI

In 1996, as soon as He Eye Specialist Hospital made some progress, He Wei came out of nowhere and said, "I'm going to run a university." He Xiangdong was startled, and thought, "Brother, there you are again!"

He Xiangdong had a deep understanding of He Wei, and he summed up two classic sentences: first, He Wei was a man living on the clouds. Second, in He Eye Specialist Hospital, he is the only one above the clouds. What does it mean? First, He Wei is an idealistic leader. His thinking is often advanced, does not play cards according to common sense, and sometimes even poetic, saying that "boundless" is not exaggerated. Second, it is said that the implementation of the problem, it is natural and unrestrained, but it must be carried out on the ground.

It doesn't matter. A little money earned by He Eye Specialist Hospital over the past few years, as well as the huge loans he has won, have all been invested-if the money had been invested in real estate without running a college, it would have already made money back to Jinshan Silver Mountain. If you do not run a college and run a hospital, you can also run several eye hospitals; and if you run a university, you will not be able to earn the money you put into it for many years!

Of course, He Wei's idea of running a school has once again met with the opposition of the majority of people. They all thought He Wei was incredible: "you are about 'country' all day. What does the country have to do with you?" "It’s the relationship between air and water," he said. Without a country, the individual dries up. "

He insisted on building a university because he knew that He Wei, He Xiangdong, Fu Lifang, his younger brother and daughter-in-law Fudao and Mei[john1]  had only eight hands in total. Even with all the doctors, nurses and staff ofHe Eye Specialist Hospital, there was only one regiment, and the strength was still too limited. If a "City of Brightness" is to be established in the future, it will be impossible without the reserve force trained by itself to supplement it.

According to the relevant policies and regulations of the state, He did not have the qualifications to run a school at first, so He could only find an institution to rely on and co-operate with others. Later, gradually developed, graduates went to society in batches, and gained a good reputation. The state learned that he was really running a school and educated people, so He gradually gained power. Now, Ho's Medical College has been upgraded to the second batch of undergraduate universities.

In September 2015, Liaoning Ho’s Medical College, Dongling District, Shenyang.

On this day, the opening ceremony of freshmen of Grade 2015 has just begun.

He Wei encouraged freshmen who somewhat lack confidence in life with a speech, "going to college is like getting on a train. Students at Tsinghua and Peking University are in first class, and students at key universities are in second class. Although we are in back seats, in the end, everyone will arrive at the same destination! "

Cheers! Stamp your feet! Those with curious eyes, see new scenery of life. The boys and girls immediately surged with passion.

VII

Are these the secret for the success of He Eye Group?

Of course, the final code is still in the hands of He Wei. I sat down at his desk, ignoring his apology for "my office is a mess" and asked three questions:

1. As the head of a private enterprise, what is the most difficult thing about starting a business these years?

2. In the reality of China, relying on the government often turns into relying on good officials and clear officials. What if we do not meet them? What's your bottom line?

3. How do you propose to reform the system to absorb "overseas returnees" to return to China to start a business? My three questions are not only aimed at He Eye Group, but also against current "mass entrepreneurship, innovation" background, to explore how the country should "regiment" to hold talents at home and abroad. How to make all private enterprises develop better, so as to make China's economy more healthy and orderly, and promote more positive and stable development, which is a universal problem.

He Wei immediately understood the gist of my three questions. He said:

Over the past 20 years, I have done three things: first, I have come out of a public welfare eye care model, that is, with the money earned by the former half of the people, the latter half of the people will be treated free of charge without input from the state.

Second, hawse have built a university and trained a number of practical talents needed to "rejuvenate China." Third, I have also set up an eye industry base, which has made many leading achievements in stem cell application and research. Stem cell technology has been used in He Eye Specialist Hospital for the first time in the field of ophthalmology in China. "Independent innovation" is not an empty slogan. Now, 80% of high-end eye drugs rely on imports. Drug prices are too expensive, ordinary people cannot afford. If our drug development is done, the price of high-end eye medicine can be reduced by 10 times, 20 times!

I do these things with the power of spirit. What spirit? Conscience, responsibility and aspirations.

Fortunately, in the 20 years of such ups and downs, there are really few difficulties from all sides of society. If you really work to treat the people, the government and officials are willing to help you, the people get benefits, of course, will strongly support you.

The biggest resistance comes from peers. After more than 30 years of reform and opening up, the state has spent a lot of money to train so many foreign students, and many people have really answered the call and come back to serve the motherland.

But what happened in the end? Almost all of them have been squeezed out by their peers!

When I came back, none of my classmates left, and all of them went back! Why should I be in such a hurry to suffer? In fact, heaven and earth are so broad, why can't we all cooperate and win?

Private hospitals have to rely on themselves for everything. But I am still very "upbeat". There is still a bottom line. For example, last time we set up a special award to encourage young and middle-aged people to do scientific research, but those who received the prize were all presidents and former presidents. In the past, I would have turned my face, and now what I'm saying is: thank you for raising this award to a higher level, and the next time if young people win the award, it will be better. Facing those sneaky and difficult people, I also learned to say: how can I meet your requirements?

It's not easy for me. Please help me.

My goal in life is to be “Deng Jiaxian” of Chinese ophthalmology. My dream is to build a world-class eye group. Now our situation is very good. The president of Kyushu University in Japan personally came to Shenyang to visit hues. We thought it was to cooperate with us in ophthalmology and did not expect him to ask for a full cooperation. They are in awe of our two ophthalmologists, who can set up a medical school. Our achievement in service production, learning and research can actually rank among the advanced ranks in the world! However, I am well aware that the development of private enterprises must rely on the Government. Without the support of the state, they cannot do much or do well.

Ho's next step is to be even more brilliant. In 2015, we have successfully realized computer telemedicine, which is how important it is to the villagers far away on the edge of the black ground! "Our stem cell technology research, is in a state of spurting out. Once there’s breakthrough, it will mean progress on such as retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma optic nerve atrophy, age-related macular degeneration. These long-term incurable diseases of ophthalmology, bring the dawn of cure, will cause great changes in ophthalmology medicine! If our drug prices can be successfully reduced by 10 or 20 times, how much well-being will be brought to our fellow villagers and the working people all over the world, and of course, it will also be severely suppressed by large international capital consortia. This will be an unimaginable war, a fierce battle-life and death. We He Eye Group will be dedicated to the motherland, with more than 1,600 staff members ready to fight on the battlefield!

Hereby, I would like to make two suggestions: first, for overseas students who return home to start their own businesses, they should not only strive to come back, but also pay more attention to and support them, so as to set a model of typical significance. Support it as it advocates "precision poverty alleviation" these days. Second, to support private enterprises, it is not recommended to distribute resources equally or engage in traditional declaration systems, such as projects closely related to people's livelihood, national defense, strategic science and technology, modern service industries, and economic development. The state can spend money regardless of the costs. Others go to the market and are supported by social funds. These two suggestions are also the proposals that I, as a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

VIII

Just as I was nearing the completion of this article, there was another piece of good news: on February 3, local time, at the meeting of the Advisory Board of the ICO  in Guadalajara, Mexico, He Wei was elected as a member of the ICO Advisory Board. ICO is the largest ophthalmology association in the world, with more than 120 national and ophthalmological societies. He Wei once again made history and became the first member of the ICO Advisory Committee in China.

He Wei was highly honored by the party and the state, and he was received by General Secretary Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang respectively during the two sessions of the National Committee of the People’s Republic of China. Chen Zhu, the former minister of health, visited He Eye Group for more than an hour and refused to leave for a long time. Finally, he held He Wei's hand and said, "the Party and the people should thank you!"

Now, He Wei is getting more and more famous. Honorary winners of "National non-public economy Outstanding Socialist Builders with Chinese characteristics", "Chinese Outstanding Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award", "leading figure in Liaoning Province" and "Shenyang Model Worker", etc. As the only ophthalmologist in China who also has the qualifications of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the European Society of Ophthalmology, the Japanese Society of Ophthalmology and the member of Chinese Ophthalmology, does he still have any pain as the leader of the increasingly powerful He Eye Group? Is there any trouble?

Is there any confusion? Is there anything else you can't get through?

Yes, in a word, it is still the feeling of bitter love.

Oh, great mother China, I love you with all my heart!

Mr. Lu Xun said: "since ancient times, we have had people who worked hard, people who asked for their lives for the people, and people who sacrificed their lives for the law."

This is the backbone of China. " During the war, those officers and soldiers who were stained with blood and served the country with their own lives were the heroes of the Chinese nation; in today's peacetime, people like He Wei who "work hard " for the people are the cornerstone of the continuous prosperity of our great motherland.
